I can remember being so excited for Mother’s Day when I was a kid. I would get up early and sneak downstairs to try to make my mom breakfast in bed. For context, my parent’s house had an open floor plan with the kitchen, dining room, and living room all one big space with stairs in the middle that led to the bedrooms. My parents’ bedroom was above the kitchen and had the added bonus of having a really large cut out in the wall so you could look out and see the room below. It did not have any sort of curtains or glass, just a big opening. So, I can imagine now how much rest my mom actually go those mornings listening to me try to make her a “surprise” breakfast.

She still pretended to be surprised and ate every bit of whatever my younger brother and I would prepare. It definitely got better as we got older, but I can imagine it wasn’t always an easy task.

It will be a very easy task for any moms in your life to enjoy our craft today, though. Fingerprint flowers that are “wrapped” in paper to look like an actual bouquet – it is the perfect card for any mother figure in your child’s life. And, while you make it, you can work on the TH digraph sound by talking about families – mothers, fathers, brothers, grandmothers, grandfathers, and so on. You can even play the Guess Which Mother Game I created to go with this craft – on sale until June 7, 2024 for just $1!

Supply List

  • 1 sheet of construction paper in your recipient’s favorite color
  • Colorful paint in 5 colors – one should be green, the others are your choice
  • Paint brush, cup, apron, and table covering
  • Hand wipes (not pictured but really handy to have)
  • String in any color
  • Black marker
  • Scissors (not pictured but absolutely needed)

Step-By-Step Directions

The first thing you need to do is make sure your paper is a square. I do this by folding one corner down across as pictured so that the top side is lined up with the opposite side and the opposite corner is folded in half. Then you cut the long rectangle that is below the folded paper off.

Next you will need to define the part of the paper you will paint the flowers on. I like to fold down the top corner of the square about 3 inches. Then, fold the outside corners in towards the middle as pictured.

You can now unfold your paper and the center section will be where you paint the flowers. It is now time to paint the stems – you can use the paint brush or your finger for this.

Next I like to add some leaves on the stems. Then you prepare all of your paint and your finger for painting.

Next, I dip my finger into the first color of paint and make 5 dots in a circle to make a flower. I repeat that for all of the flowers using 3 colors.

Now I use the last color to make a dot in the center of each flower. You may need to let your flowers dry for a few minutes before doing this or the colors may mix together.

While the flowers dry, you can write a message on one flap and sign your name on the other. I like to add the year, too.

After all of your paint is dry, you can fold the sides of the bundle in again and write “Happy Mother’s Day” on the outside of the flap. Then you just have to tie the string around it and your project is done.
