Paper Plate Black Cat Craft and Black Cat Dash Digital Activity for BL Blend Articulation and Phonics Practice

We are a cat family. And, as of last October, we became an exclusively black cat family. We have a pure black, a tuxedo, and a tortie – and we love them all dearly. Meet Jiji, Ceres, and Maple in the photos below.

Being a black cat mom and cat-ma (cat grandma), I had to do a Halloween-themed black cat craft. This one is sure to please anyone looking to add a little feline festiveness to your Halloween decorations. Made from supplies you likely have already, it’s perfect for an October afternoon. As an added bonus, I have the perfect black cat game to go with it, especially if your little needs to work on their BL blend. More on that later, of course.

Here is a great Pinterest pin for you!

Supply List

  • Paper plate
  • Black and green paper
  • 2 black pipe cleaners
  • Black pom pom
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Stapler

Step-by-Step Directions

Our first order of business is getting the plate cute into the crescent moon shape. It is pretty easy – all you need to do is cut a circle out of the bottom of the plate like you see below.

Next it is time to paint the crescent black. I just squirt the paint on the back of the plate and spread it out, but you can definitely paint from a container as well. Just be sure to use a table covering because this paint is messy!

While the paint dries, you can do some cutting. From the black paper, you need a medium circle for the head (about the size of the circle you cut out of the plate) and you need a tail – a long, narrow shape with one curved end.

Next I like to fold a smaller scrap of the black paper to cut out two triangle ears and two black circles for pupils.

From the green paper, you need to cut two circles for the eyes. Again, I always fold my paper so I can cut two circles at a time. I made mine too big, so I had to trim them later when I put the pupils on, so you might notice that later.

The last cutting you need to do is to cut your pipe cleaners into thirds. I thought I could make all the whiskers from one pipe cleaner, but I ended up switching to two. So, if you look at all of the previous photos, you will notice that there is only one pipe cleaner.

Once your paint is dry it is time to start assembling your cat! The first step is to glue the pupils to the eyes.

After that, attach the ears to the head.

Glue the eyes on the face next.

After that, determine where you want the nose to be and align the whiskers to that spot, 3 on each side.

To finish the face, glue your black pom pom to the center of the whiskers.

Now you just need to staple the tail and the head to the plate.

Now you can enjoy your Paper Plate Black Cat!
