When I think of badgers, I can’t help but think of the movie UHF. In the movie, a man is taking a delivery of animals he is going to use in a show and the delivery person is listing off the animals being delivered. Three badgers are in the list, and the show man immediately says “Badgers? Badgers? We don’t need no stinking badgers!” It is in reference to a 1920s book and 1940s movie The Treasure of the Sierra Madre line about not needing sheriff badges. That line is also referenced in the movie Blazing Saddles, but I’m guessing you are not here to hear about old movies.

Anyway, this week’s craft is a Paper Plate Badger. It goes together pretty quickly and is the perfect way to get some good /B/ sound practice. While you wait for the craft paint to dry, you could definitely play the game I highlight at the end of this post – Feed the Badger. You could also read a book about badgers, such as the classic Bedtime for Frances by Russell Hoban. I’ve not ever seen badgers at a zoo, but if they have them at a zoo near you, that would be a fun field trip.

Supply List
- Paper plate
- Black paint
- Paint brush, cup, apron, and table covering
- Black and white paper
- Black pom pom for nose
- 2 google eye
- Scissors
- Glue
Step-by-Step Directions
The first thing I like to do for this craft is paint my plate so that it can dry while I do the cutting later. You do not need to cover the while plate since you will be folding in side flaps. Just make sure you get the top and middle like you see in the photos below.

Once the paint dries it is time to fold the sides of the plate in towards the center. They should only overlap slightly. You will want to fold them as flat as possible and then glue the flaps in – you might need to weigh them down a bit while they dry. The glue bottle works for this. You’ll notice I had a helper – you could also use a cat to weigh it down, but mine wouldn’t stay still…

The next step (or a step you can do while the paint dries) is to cut out the white facial marking (rounded triangle with a rounded top) and two black ears (slightly bulging triangles).

Now we just have to attach all the facial features. The black pom pom goes at the bottom of the plate. The white facial marking goes at the top of the plate pointing down towards the nose. The eyes go on either side of the white facial marking, and then the ears point up above each eye. Do not put glue on the whole ears like I did – it only needs to be along the bottom.

That is it! You have made a wonderful badger! You will notice in the photo below that mine look very different from each other – that is okay. Nature has lots of variation and that makes it beautiful and interesting.

As I have said each week, my goal with this blog is to make sure that people leave each of my posts feeling equipped to practice articulation or phonics with their learner. So, I always have a game from my Teachers Pay Teachers store (Autumn Emigh Creative Communication Solutions) on special sale for you. This week’s game is a straightforward game with treats to feed the badger that disappear as he eats them. Feed the Badger has 12 Initial, Medial, and Final B target words. Take turns rolling a dice to move to the next snack and feed it to the badger! Very motivating for kids and perfect to fill little bits of time, you will turn to this game over and over. You receive a link to a Google Slide version as well as a color game board and a black and white homework version. On sale for half off (just $1) until May 31st!
