I have often said that I hit the Dad jackpot. My Dad has been very hands on my whole life. He worked on a paving crew in Michigan, so he would be laid off for at least 5 months each year (although he did drive snowplow in the winter sometimes). That means that I got to spend all winter hanging with my dad, and I loved it! He is also my biggest fan and was at all but a handful of my cross country, volleyball, track, band, and 4-H events.
Of course, when I fell for my husband, I knew he would have some pretty big shoes to fill when it came to my Dad expectations. He has hit it out of the ball park – I can’t imagine a better Dad for our kids. And their grandpas are pretty awesome, too. So, I will definitely be celebrating all the amazing father figures in our lives this weekend.

Our craft this week goes out to all the grill master dads out there. We all think they are “Grilly” Awesome and this card is the perfect way to show them! The bonus is that it does not take a lot of time or supplies to make this card, so you will have even more time to play this week’s game – Guess Which Father – with your grilly awesome dad! Or whatever other activity he likes, I suppose. It is his day. 🙂
Supply List
- Black, grey, red, and orange paper (I swear my paper is light grey and not white – it did not photograph well)
- Small hands to trace (mine are way too big for this project, but yours are probably fine)
- Black marker
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Glue

Step-by-Step Directions
The first thing we will be doing is making the fire – just like a real grill! Except we are just going to trace our hands on red and orange paper. I like to trace both of my hands, one on each color. And then I make them about 5 times smaller than my actual hands because my grill can only be so big and I don’t want to have a dangerous fire! 😉

Next, I cut out the hand prints. I usually turn them over so that the pencil marks don’t show when you look at the grill.

Now we need to cut the grey shapes. We start by cutting a long, thin strip and then cutting it in half. These shorter strips will be the legs of the grill.

Our next cut is the spatula. You can make a thin strip and then an arch shape if it is easier, but I usually just cute a square with a handle and then round things up. I had to cut this down even more to fit my grill, but you may have a bigger grill than I do. Make it bigger and you can always trim the end of the spatula and the end of the handle.

The last cut with the grey paper is the half circle that goes inside the grill card. We will write our message on this.

The last cut will be the black paper. I like to fold it in half first – like a taco, not like a hotdog. Then, I cut a half circle – the flat part of the half circle is the fold side. Then the grill can open like a card. You will want to size this so your hand fire looks proportional to the grill.

We have some marker work to do next. To make the spatula look like an actual cooking utensil, you will want to draw 4 lines on the arch surface.

You also need to write your message for dad. I am a big fan of “You’re “Grilly” Awesome Dad!” but you can add any message you like.

To assemble I start with the legs. Make sure they are roughly the same angle so your grill isn’t too tipsy.

Then you can glue on your fire hands – remember to put the pencil marked sides to the back.

The message goes inside next. I like to make sure it is roughly in the middle of my grill, but it is your art piece, so you can line it up however you feel.

Finally, gluing the spatula to the front of the card is a great finishing touch. This is where I discovered mine was too big and I had to cut it down. So, if yours is a bit off, no worries. You can give it a trim. 🙂

And there you have it! How cute is this card!?! I would love to receive it (as a very non-grill master), so I am sure the fathers in your life will love it, too.
