I grew up in rural Michigan surrounded by farms. In fact, my grandparents’ farm is the place, other than my own home and my school, where I spent the most time. I think my first word was Moo because I was completely in love with cows. I always wanted to go pet the cows and feed the cows (by picking hand fulls of weeks and offering them over the electric fence) and Moo with the cows. Speaking of which, if you have never really looked at a cow’s eyes, you should! They are so beautiful! Seriously, huge lashes and such deep brown. If someone wanted to compliment me, they could just tell me I have cow eyes.

Our craft this week is an adorable Handprint Cow. It is actually a pretty quick craft with just a few supplies, but it would be a great decoration or gift. You could write a message on the back like “I love you to the Moooon” if you wanted to use it as a card. And it captures the size of your child’s hand, so you could even do a series over the course of a few years – a cow family. You know that I also have a fun activity for you to do to work on the Hard C or K sound – check out my Roll a Hard C or K Word Digital Activity at then end of this blog. Perfect for a rainy day or to get kids excited about making or visiting cows.
Supply List:
- White, black, tan, and cream paper
- 2 google eyes
- Black marker
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Glue
You will also need a hand to trace, but hopefully you always have one or two of those hanging around. 🙂

Step-by-Step Directions:
The first thing you will need to do is trace a hand on your paper. Ideally, you will have a smaller hand, but this works regardless of size. (Some projects DO NOT work with adult hands, but this is not one of them.). It is best to try to keep it on one half of your white paper as there are a few more things to cut out of that piece of paper.

Next you will cut out your hand.

While you have the white paper out, you can go ahead and cut out a head shape. I think it looks a bit like a smooshed candy corn but slightly more rounded. You will also need 2 cow ears and a skinny piece to make into the tail.

Our next paper to cut will be the black paper. You need a tail tip – I make this like an upside down raindrop shape – and a hair tuft – this can be any shape you want, but I went with curly hair.

After that, we will cut out a tan muzzle for the cow – it is just an oval that is slightly wider than the bottom of your head shape.

The last cuts will be the horns out of cream paper. You can make these longer or shorter as you see fit – cows have a variety of horn sizes.

Once you finish cutting, it is time to use your black marker. I like to give my cow nostrils and a mouth on the muzzle.

Then I black feet on the cow and then as many spots as you like. I am a fan of 3 spots myself.

Now it is assembly time! First, I glue the muzzle on the head.

After that, it is time for the ears, horns, and hair tuft.

We can’t forget to add the black tip the the cow’s tail.

It really starts to come together when the tail and head are attached to the body.

The only thing left now is to glue the google eyes on. And there you have it! An adorable cow creation!
