Plastic Spoon Flying Eagle and Feed the Eagle Digital Game for Long E Sound Articulation and Phonics Practice

I live in a suburb of Columbus, Ohio, and we have a nesting pair of bald eagles. This is incredibly exciting to me. We have been going to Seney National Wildlife Refuge in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula my whole life, and it was a HUGE deal when we saw the eagle’s nest there. I think we also saw one of the eagles once. So, to be driving in my neighborhood and have an eagle fly by or land in a tree across the creek has been amazing.

This week’s craft is similarly exciting to me. These eagle crafts can really get some distance due to the stone weight. It makes them a bit trickier to make, but so worth it!

Step-by-Step Directions

The first steps for todays craft are cutting the pieces from the paper plate. To do that, I first fold the plate in half and cut it on the fold. Next, I fold one of the halves in half to find the center point. I then cut from there to make a piece that is about one third of that half. Bigger or smaller will also work, so do not worry too much about size here.

Next you will paint the bottom of the half plate piece. I like to just squirt my paint on the plate piece, but you could paint from a cup or a palate of some sort, too.

While that paint dries, we are going to build the rest of the eagle. The first thing you do is put the small stone in the bowl of one of the spoons. Next, you put the bowl of the other spoon over the stone and use a rubber band to hold the spoon bowls together around the stone.

Every bird needs a beak, so we cut a small triangle out of orange paper and glue it to the back of one of the spoons.

To complete the head, use a black Sharpie to draw two eyes on your eagle.

To attach the tail, use hot glue to attach the smaller plate to the handle of the bottom spoon. You only want the tail to be attached and overlapped about an inch with that spoon handle to make sure a lot of the tail is showing when you attach the wings.

Finally, hot glue your brown plate piece to the upper spoon handle. Make sure it is mostly centered to make it fly the farthest.

And there you have it! A far-flying eagle glider.
