Paper Plate Chalk Sunshine Craft and SH Hidden Pictures for SH Sound Articulation and Phonics Practice

I have to admit, I am not a summer lover. I do not enjoy being hot. When the temperatures climb into the 80s I start to wilt. It becomes uncomfortable to do all the things I love to do outside and honestly, I count down the days until fall. I am, however, a big fan of a spring or fall day where the sunshine feels warm on your skin while the air is cool and crisp. It is heaven to me. I love to be in the woods on a hike on a day like that with the sunshine peeking through the trees. Sun, sun, sun… here it comes!

Our craft today is an ode to happy sunshine. It goes together quickly and is simple enough for almost any age to enjoy. It also goes perfectly with practicing the SH sound, and I provide a game you can play with your learner while the paint dries. More on that later, as usual. 🙂

Step-by-Step Directions

The first thing we need to do is get our paper plate ready to paint so it can dry. To do this, we need to fold the plate in half and then cut on the fold line.

After that, you can paint the half plate yellow.

When the paint is dry, you can draw the sun’s mouth with your black marker. I like to make sure there are smile lines on either side.

Next I attach the google eyes to complete the sun’s face.

I like to use a stapler to attach the plate to your background paper. You can attach the plate to the long or short side of the paper – it works well either way, but I have to say that sunbeams look more like hair when you attach it to the short side. It is really up to you which look want.

After the plate is attached, you can use the chalk to draw sunbeams. I started with the orange chalk and then added the yellow in between and around the orange. I used varying line lengths to give a good contrast.

That’s it! As I said at the beginning, it is a quick and easy craft. I am also attaching a photo to show how it looks with dark blue and lighter blue paper and with the plate attached to both the long and short side of the paper. I hope it helps make your choices easier.
